NRRI Research on Thermally ModifiedNorth American Wood Species

Evaluation of thermally modified Eastern Hemlock, Balsam Fir, White Ash, Red Maple and Yellow Poplar according to American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) methodologies.

Why this research matters

Most published thermal modification research has been conducted on European species using European test methods. The NRRI project — carried out by the Natural Resources Research Institute at the University of Minnesota Duluth — focused specifically on North American species evaluated according to American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) methodologies.

This makes the dataset directly relevant to North American markets, specifiers and building codes, providing a credible, standards-based foundation for thermal modification performance claims.
