Why Dimensional Stability
Matters

One of the most important findings from the NRRI study.

When thermally modified wood is discussed, durability often receives most of the attention. However, the NRRI study documented significant reductions in moisture uptake, swelling and shrinkage across all species evaluated.

Why is this important?

Dimensional movement is often one of the primary causes of:

  • Coating failure

  • Joint opening

  • Warping

  • Distortion

  • Increased maintenance

For windows, doors, cladding and exterior millwork, dimensional stability may be as important as biological durability. The NRRI data demonstrates how thermal modification can improve performance by reducing the wood's response to changing moisture conditions.
