Four Years of Outdoor Exposure in Hawaii

Real-world performance under severe decay conditions.

The NRRI study included up to 48 months of outdoor exposure testing in Hilo, Hawaii. Hilo is widely recognized as one of the world's most demanding environments for evaluating wood durability due to:

  • High rainfall

  • High humidity

  • Warm temperatures

  • Intense biological activity

The study used AWPA outdoor exposure methods to evaluate the long-term performance of thermally modified North American species. While laboratory testing provides important information, field exposure helps demonstrate how products perform under actual service conditions.

The results showed that several thermally modified species maintained strong performance after four years of exposure.
